Nine Competing For Fashionetta Titles
Gamma Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will host "Fashionetta 2007" at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, at Caldwell Auditorium.

The event is the sorority's annual scholarship fundraiser. Fifty-three scholarships have been awarded since the year 2000 to high school seniors in the East Texas. Nine females ranging in ages 4-18 will be competing for the title of Miss Future Fashionetta (4-6); Miss Petite Fashionetta (7-10), Miss Junior Fashionetta (11-13), and Miss Fashionetta (14-18).

The competition is Alpha Kappa Alpha's commitment to promote finer womanhood, scholarship and culture to the community. Locally, the sorority sponsors RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) at Peete Elementary providing tutorials for second grade students; Expanding Your Horizons and voter registration. Members also assisted with the Katrina hurricane victims by providing clothing and other needed items.

The theme for this year Sepia Fashion Revue is "Simply Elegant." The models are Vogue-Esquire models of Chicago, and will show 170 creations from top fashion houses in the United States and Europe. The production will feature the latest designs from several top world class designers: Donna Karen, St. John Knits, Issey Miyake, Richardo Pardo, Vera Wang, Angela Missoni, Georgio Armani, Karen Okada and Oscar de Le Renta.

Tickets may be purchased at the door, M&M Record Shop on West Bow Street, Art From The Soul and One More Pair on West Erwin Street. Tickets may also be purchased from the contestants or any member of the sorority. Ticket chairperson is Winifred Johnson. She can be reached at 903-597-3916. Adult tickets are $15 and student tickets are $10.

In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha became America's first greek letter organization, beginning on the campus of Howard University, Washington, D.C.

In January, 2008 the sorority will observe its 100-year anniversary. Chairpersons for the Fashionetta are Serena Sentell, Johnnie Seastrunk, and Eloyce Green. Darlene Lewis is the president of the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

The Fashionetta participants are:

Carmesha Sanders is a 17-year-old junior at John Tyler High School. She is a member and captain of the varsity cheerleaders. Ms. Sanders, known to her family and friends as "Mesha," has been cheering since the age of 4 with area squads as Pop Warner and nationally with Spirit of Tyler.

She was crowned Miss Junior Debutante in 2005, is a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, John Tyler Varsity and Inspirational Choir, Smith Temple Church of God in Christ choir and Future Business Leaders of America and Advanced Via Individual Determination. She enjoys cheerleading, talking on the phone, singing, cosmetology and shopping. She is a member of Smith Temple COGIC where she is active in the youth department.

She is the daughter of Michael and Gean Sanders and granddaughter of the late Herbert Sanders Sr. and Annie M. Sanders McCuin and Willie James Rasberry and Gertie Mae Johnson.

Inger Rochelle Coleman is the daughter of Risa and Bennie Coleman Jr. She attends Palestine High School where she is a senior.

Her hobbies include reading, traveling, singing and writing. She participates in band, choir, athletic training, power lifting and track and field. She belongs to FCCLA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America and National Honor Society.

Kaleon Grant is the daughter of ShaVonda Grant. She is 7 years old and attends Mamie G. Griffin Elementary where she is in the first grade.

Her hobbies include reading, writing, cooking and helping others. She plays soccer in Tyler.

Briannia Nichole Crowe, 4, is the daughter of Darrell and Kandy Crowe of Tyler. Her grandparents are George and Mary Crowe and Roy and Nellie Wesley, all of Tyler.

She loves to sing, dance, and read books, play games and act scenes from the Tyler Perry movies. She also likes to swim and play outside with her friends. She is being tutored and receiving etiquette classes from Rita Swink. She is a member of Smith Temple Church of God in Christ.

Tierra Hill is the daughter of Tobias and Chasity Hill. She is 8 years old and a third-grader at Owens Elementary School. She is a member of New Zion Baptist Church No. 1.

She enjoys praise dancing, serving on the junior usher board and singing in the choir. Her hobbies include singing and reading.

Imani Desmonae' Johnson is the daughter of Roland and LaKundria Johnson. She is 6 years old and attends Cumberland Academy where she is in the first grade. Her hobbies include gymnastics.

Dezarae' Kayan Harris is the daughter of Tanisha Jones and granddaughter of Tawana "TJ" Felton. She is in the first grade at AIA Charter School.

She enjoys reading, dancing and playing with her baby dolls. She likes to swim.

Kiara Danielle Ross is the daughter of Terri Johnson and Richard Ross. She is 12 years old and attends Boulter Middle School.

Her hobbies include volleyball, basketball, and softball, dancing and shopping. She is active in youth adult choir and usher ministry at St. Louis Baptist Church, volunteers at the public library and Discovery Science Place. She was recognized in the Who's Who Among Outstanding Students, Duke University Talented Students and Boulter Middle School Student Council.

Dominique Jiara Williams is the daughter of the Rev. Jerry and Jean Williams. She is 17 years old and attends Henderson High School.

She is involved in band, twirling and choir. She is a member of the Student Council and Key Club.
