San Jacinto Two Wins From Title
By CHRIS PARRY

San Jacinto College midfielder Edgar Alvarez received a clear out pass 30 yards away from goal, but no one on Jefferson College came out to challenge him, so Alvarez decided to try his luck and take a shot.
Alvarez and the Coyotes came up aces with Alvarez finding the left corner of the net past a diving Jefferson College keeper.
It was the only goal of the match as San Jacinto upset the defending national champions, 1-0, Thursday in the first round of the NJCAA Men's Division 1 Soccer Tournament at Tyler Junior College's Pat Hartley Soccer Complex.
San Jacinto advanced to the semifinals, where it will meet No. 1-seed Georgia Perimeter, which coasted to a 3-0 win over CCBC Essex (Maryland). The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
The other Saturday semifinal pits Marshalltown (Iowa) against No. 2 seed Yavapai (Ariz.). That match will begin at 6 p.m. The consolation semifinals will take place at noon and 2 p.m.
San Jacinto 1, Jefferson College 0
The Coyotes nearly opened the scoring in the first minute when Rogelio Hernandez received a pass and was wide-open in front of goal, but he scuffed his shot.
San Jacinto was denied again when Alvarez beat his defender and the Jefferson College keeper to loft a shot heading for the back of the net. Only a sliding clear away by Vikings defender Marcus Amorim kept the match scoreless at halftime.
Neither team could mount much in the second half until Alvarez's goal, which even surprised his head coach.
"We missed some golden opportunities and then scored one of those happenstance goals that came out of nothing," said Coyotes head coach Dr. David Santesteban. "But you need those in the national tournament."
Jefferson College looked to have forged an equalizer in the final minutes when a corner found the head of Claudio Dantas. San Jancinto keeper Emilio Frias was knocked down on the play, giving Dantas an open net, but Leon Williams was in the right place for the Coyotes to head the ball off the line.
Marshalltown 2, Mercer County 1
Mercer went in front midway through the first half, thanks to a strong individual effort by Rob Carerra. The Vikings midfielder stole the ball and raced away from the defenders before getting past Marshalltown keeper Blake Elliot and slotting his shot into an empty net.
The Tigers pressed for an equalizer and were rewarded in the final minutes when Juliano Oliveira outmuscled a defender to get some space and fire a shot past Mercer's keeper to make the score 1-1 at halftime.
The teams continued their stalemate until Marshalltown turned a corner into the game-winning goal. Bryant Coto whipped in his kick to the near post with Saulo Lotterio waiting with a header past Mercer keeper Alexander Rodriguez Eliasson. Mercer nearly tied the match in the final minutes, but Jackson Sengbloh's shot glanced off the post.
