Tie One On For Safety

East Texas Region Mothers Against Drunk Driving will present its annual “Tie One On For Safety” event on Nov. 15 in Tyler.
Vicki Knox, director, said “Tie One On” is an opportunity to increase awareness of the problem of drunken driving and recognize people who are devoted to preventing it.

Set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Peltier Nissan dealership at 3201 WSW Loop 323, the event will include lunch, a program and the presentation of Difference Maker awards, she said.

Reservations are due by Wednesday and be can be made by calling 903-534-6000, or by sending an e-mail to nan.scarbrough@madd.org.

Speakers will include Tyler Mayor Joey Seeber and Charles Hurley, the national chief executive officer of MADD.

Set to receive awards are Sheryl Coffey, executive officer of Piney Woods Regional Advisory Council Trauma Service Area G, as well as Cindy Grimes and Lana Kaye Taylor, two longtime participants on MADD victim impact panels.

MADD is also set to recognize local law enforcement for its efforts to crack down on drunken driving and The University of Texas at Tyler and Texas College for becoming one of the first colleges in the nation to establish University MADD chapters.

“Tie One On” is being presented by Piney Woods Regional Advisory Council Trauma Service Area G. Parents Anonymous Wine Festival

A wine festival to benefit Parents Anonymous of Tyler will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at Rivercreek Farm and Ranch. The event will honor the memory of longtime PA board member and founding chairman Glenda Heaton.

“Glenda spent many hours ensuring the success of the inaugural wine event and marking it with her personal touch and her love of Parents Anonymous. It is an honor to name our new home in her memory,” said Don Kent, general chairman.

Guests will enjoy food and dancing to music of Darren Cable Band. There also will be silent and live auctions.

Free College Fair

Representatives from more than 90 colleges are registered to attend the Tyler Area College Fair from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Oil Palace. The fair is open to prospective college students as well as parents, teachers and counselors. Admission is free.

“We are excited to be able to offer Tyler area students and their parents the opportunity to visit with representatives from so many colleges. People often think this event is only for high school juniors and seniors, but we encourage all high school students to attend,” said organizer Luci Mimms.

Funds For Literacy

Longview-based East Texas Literacy Council will present its Doodles, Dessert & More! fundraiser from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Nov. 12 at Café Barron’s, Loop 281 and McCann.

Celebrities from sports and entertainment have autographed items that will be put up for auction.

CASA for Kids of East Texas will have its annual Champagne & Chocolate fundraiser from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the KE Cellars in the French Quarter, Tyler.
Patrons will enjoy a night of wine and fine chocolates.

CASA for Kids volunteers serve as an independent voice in court for abused and neglected children.
