In a grand celebration of “Nature’s Majesty,” Grace Hartley of the House of Ramey was crowned queen of the 2007 Texas Rose Festival during Thursday’s coronation matinee at the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center at The University of Texas at Tyler.

Miss Ramey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ramey III, of Tyler, will reign over the festivities, which continue through Sunday during Tyler’s annual celebration of the rose.

The lavish coronation production is full of pageantry, and this year’s was no exception. Costume and set designer Winn Morton spun concepts into costumes, depicting the exotic, such as “Jungles of India,” “Volcano” and “Wildfire,” and the serene, such as “Camellia” and “Spring Rose” — as well as other seasons and moods of “Nature’s Majesty.”

Entertainment was provided by the Tyler Junior College Apache Belles, vocalists Nancy Fisher and Mark Sullivan and Vicho Vicencio and his musicians. Once again, narrator Barry Hanson was the “voice” of the queen’s coronation performance.

The production culminated when Miss Ramey was presented on stage and crowned queen by Texas Rose Festival Association President E.W. Clawater III.

Queen Grace was assisted on stage by her escort, Samuel Bracken Walden, son of Nancy Bracken Walden and Lawson W. Walden.

Her attendants were Mallory Kristine Curtis, trainbearer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bradly Curtis; Sarah Beth Michelle Rogers, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Rick Rogers, trainbearer; Elizabeth Reid Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Fletcher Walker III, royal attendant; Ann Caswell Ferguson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Winston Ferguson Jr., royal attendant; Molly Louise Berry, daughter of Elizabeth Lawrence Berry and T. Craig Berry, maiden to the queen; and Smith P. Reynolds IV, son of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Perry Reynolds III, scepter bearer.

The final coronation performance is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Cowan Center.

CORONATION GOWN

Queen Grace’s gown is reminiscent of a garden trellis — full, romantic and off the shoulder — and is predominantly white with pale green and gold accents, according to information supplied by the Texas Rose Festival Association.

The theme of “Nature’s Majesty” is depicted in the queen’s train with swans, a frog on a lily pad, butterflies, dragonflies and weeping willow trees. The entire train is surrounded by three-dimensional leaves, which appear to float and move when Miss Ramey walks. The entire nature motif is carried out in crystal jewels, crystal mirrors, pearls, sequins, stones and gold bugle beads.

Three crowns adorn the train, symbolic of the three generations of queens in the Ramey family. Queen Grace’s train is 16 feet long and seven feet wide, and is made of green velvet, white and silver brocade, and lined with silk taffeta. Miss Ramey’s gown took six months to create, and required tens of thousands of jewels, rhinestones and embroidery.

Winn Morton of Dallas designed the dress. Mrs. Richard Erickson created the gown and train in her workshop in San Antonio.

The queen’s crown is seven inches tall and is created in 22-karat gold and decorated with jeweled butterflies, roses and dragonflies. Circling the crown are leaves of crystal and emerald stones. The scepter is a grand, embellished rose with a dragonfly perched on top. The crown and scepter were executed by Tom Newbury and Tom Sanden of Dallas.
