Jarvis Pioneer Hall Of Fame To Honor 5
HAWKINS - Jarvis Christian College will honor five during its Pioneer Hall of Fame Banquet and Enshrinement Ceremony on Saturday.

The honorees are Doris Baker Barrett, Mattie Frost McCloria, Tommy C. Portley, Stanley "The Sheriff" Richard, and Hiawatha E. Studdard Jr.

The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. in the Anthony Robinson Varsity Gymnasium following a reception at 6 p.m.

Honorees were selected for contributions to their professions, communities and Jarvis Christian College, said a statement from the college.

The Pioneer Hall of Fame was initiated in 1994 by President, Dr. Sebetha Jenkins.


THE HONOREES
During a long teaching career in California public schools, Doris Baker Barrett of San Francisco established the Bobby Barrett Endowment Fund at St. Mary's College High School-Berkeley in the name of her late husband, helped establish Mills Grove Child Development Center and helped develop the Berkeley First Cooperative Homes Association.

At Jarvis she received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and elementary and early childhood education. She pursued additional studies at Texas Southern University, San Francisco State University and the University of California at Berkeley.

Mattie Frost McCloria of Dayton, Ohio, attended school in Gladewater before receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1954 from Jarvis. She also attended Texas College, Bishop College, Texas Women's University, Central State and Wayne State Universities. She taught public school for more than 35 years in Texas, Ohio and New York and published a geometry book that was used as a state curriculum study guide.

Tommy Portley of Houston, a native of Henderson, graduated magna cum laude from Jarvis in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in history. He earned a master's degree from Texas Southern University. He taught and held positions at high schools and colleges in the Houston area. In 1972, he joined Allstate Insurance and now owns an agency. He was named an "Agent of the Year" and received company recognitions. He is active in social and professional organizations.

Stanley Richard of Hawkins was known as "The Sheriff" when he played safety with the San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins football teams. He was a scholar athlete in football, baseball and track and field. He was an All American safety at The University of Texas at Austin and then played with the Chargers from 1991-94 and Redskins from 1995-98. In the NFL, he returned 21 interceptions for 352 yards and two touchdowns and played in the Super Bowl in 1994.

Hiawatha Studdard, Jr. of Birmingham, Ala., received a bachelor of arts degree from Jarvis in 1967. He pursued graduate studies at Alabama State University. After serving in the U.S. Army, he joined American National Insurance Co. He later worked at Booker T. Washington and Mutual Savings life insurance companies. He held numerous executive positions in the industry and received awards. He is a supporter of Boy Scouts of America, Boys' and Girls' Club of Alabama, and Junior Achievement.

Studdard is the uncle of famed "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard.
