Fryman, Henderson Stay Unbeaten In District 12-4A
By CHRIS PARRY
Staff Writer
HENDERSON - The only thing that seemed to stop Henderson tailback Telvin Fryman was dehydration.
Despite being forced to sit out all of the second quarter and some of the third, Fryman carried 19 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns to lead Henderson past Hallsville 35-27 on homecoming Friday at Lions Stadium.
The victory kept Henderson (4-1, 2-0) unbeaten in District 12-4A while Hallsville (2-3) drops to 0-2. The Lions are now tied with Nacogdoches and Marshall for first place in the district.
Fryman had 90 yards by the end of the first quarter, thanks to a 40-yard scamper and a 23-yard touchdown run. But he was forced to leave after that and was unable to return until midway through the third quarter.
With Fryman out of the lineup, Henderson quarterback Hunter Skelton and receiver Justin Horton made up the difference, hooking up twice for scoring passes of 15 and 54 yards. Skelton finished with 127 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Hallsville quarterback Tom Lee Hutchinson passed for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Hutchinson also rushed for a touchdown in the loss.
Henderson seemed to be in control after Fryman's 38-yard touchdown run gave the Lions a 35-18 lead with 7:38 remaining.
Hallsville, which shot itself in the foot several times with four turnovers, began a comeback that started on a fortuitous safety by Henderson. Skelton tried to pitch back to Fryman at the Lions 10, but it went behind him and out of the end zone for a safety.
The ensuing kick gave Hallsville the ball back at its own 48 trailing 35-20 with 4:57 remaining. Hutchinson hit Brian Jones - finished with three catches for 66 yards and a touchdown - for 38 yard gain. Three plays later, Hutchinson leaned in for a 3-yard score on a quarterback keeper to make it 35-27 with 4:16 remaining.
Henderson needed to run out the clock if it was to secure a win and Skelton and Fryman made it happen. Skelton scrambled for 16 yards on second-and14 to give the Lions one first down while Fryman took care of the other two, enabling Skelton to kneel down three times for the victory.
