Injury Forces Crowder To Miss Game
Chase Colston
IRVING - John Tyler, The University of Texas, Denver Broncos.

Tim Crowder has taken a rare walk up the steps to the big stage. Now it's his turn to turn up the volume and move his career into superstar mode.

He would have had that chance Saturday two hours west of home, but fate had other plans.

Crowder, a 2003 JT grad, sprained his left ankle Thursday in practice against the Dallas Cowboys and will be out at least two weeks, the Denver Post reported. X-rays on his ankle were negative, the Post reported.

Attempts to reach Crowder by phone Thursday and Friday were unsuccessful. He was expected to be on the sidelines during Saturday's game.

That leaves him out of Denver's game against the Cowboys at 7 p.m. at Texas Stadium. The Broncos' second-round draft pick wears No. 96.

The 6-4, 275-pound defensive end is currently second on the depth chart on the left side. Denver drafted right defensive end Jarvis Moss, a Denton native, in the first round of April's draft.

Crowder, who signed a four-year deal with Denver with more than $1 million guaranteed, was a four-year starter at Texas and earned second-team All-America honors his senior year. He ranks 11th all-time in sacks for the Longhorns.

His 10.5 sacks as a senior were the most by a Texas player in 22 years.

Add in a 2005 national championship ring, and Crowder's got the experience and the potential to make some serious noise in the NFL. It's icing on the cake that he has the chance to further showcase his talent against the Cowboys.

The last time Crowder was a part of a team in Texas Stadium was in the 2000 Class 5A Division II state semifinals against Arlington Lamar. He was moved up from the junior varsity when JT made its run to the state title game.

Crowder has the potential to make an impact sooner for Denver with his college experience. Moss did not start for Florida until last season when the Gators won the national title.

He saw playing time in Denver's first preseason game, a 17-13 win over San Francisco, and recorded a sack for his first official tackle.

The injury could hamper Crowder's shot to move into the starter's role sooner, but he may play in the Broncos' final preseason game Aug. 30 at home against the Arizona Cardinals.
