A memorial service was held today in Austin for U.S. District Judge William Wayne Justice.
A memorial service was held today in Austin for U.S. District Judge William Wayne Justice.
Justice, died last week at 89 in Austin. A native of Athens, he spent most of his career as a federal judge in Tyler.
He was remembered at a memorial service attended by friends and family as a perpetual seeker of justice. His proteges recalled personal memories of Justice, as well as his historic rulings on criminal justice, public education and racial equality.
His decisions forced Texas to improve its prison and juvenile justice systems; broke down racial barriers in public housing and education; and opened public schools to the children of illegal immigrants.
