Memorial Day Ceremonies Scheduled
Memorial Day ceremonies are scheduled to take place at two local cemeteries on Monday to honor veterans and remember those who have fallen.
The first is planned to start at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery at 12053 Texas Highway 64 West in Tyler.
The speaker is the Rev. Mike Ford of Kirkland Church of the Nazarene and music will be provided by Tyler's Gary Buster.
Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, is the main speaker along with Capt. Justin Lee of the U.S. Army Reserves and members of the Korean War Veterans Association.
The later ceremony is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Rose Lawn Memorial Park cemetery at 2003 Blue Mountain Blvd.
Speakers at Rose Lawn will include Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass, the Rev. David Dykes of Green Acres Baptist Church, retired Tuskegee Airmen Capt. Sam Garrison, and Lee, following his appearance at the Memorial Park ceremony.
Music will be provided by Steve and Camilla Charles and Taps will be played by Ken Muckelroy, the Texas State Director of Bugles Across America. Rose Lawn also will provide refreshments.
Both ceremonies will incorporate the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner, the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the playing of Taps.
In addition to the two cemetery services, Carter BloodCare is running a blood drive at the Lowes on South Broadway Avenue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.
According to the event of information, the purpose is "to raise awareness about the need for blood during the summer and also to give community members the opportunity to donate blood in honor of the men and women who have given their all for us."
