In a week of dazzling offensive numbers, Baylor wide receiver Antwan Goodley stood out.
The junior from Midland High School was selected as The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the eighth week of the college football season, Cindy Smoak, vice president of SPORTyler, announced Monday.
The Big 12 Conference receiver had 11 catches for 182 yards and two touchdowns in a 71-7 win over Iowa State in Waco Saturday. Baylor tied a school record with its 10th straight win. The Bears are also No. 8 in the first edition of the Bowl Championship Series standings, their highest ranking in the 16 year history of the BCS.
Week 8 Honorable Mentions:
Jace Amaro, Texas Tech — The junior tight end from San Antonio (MacArthur High School) had nine catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns in the Red Raiders’ 37-27 win over West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va.
Mike Evans, Texas A&M — The sophomore wide receiver from Galveston (Ball HS) had 11 catches for 287 yards and four touchdowns in the Aggies’ 45-41 loss to Auburn in College Station.
Henry Josey, Missouri — The junior running back from Angleton (Angleton HS) ran for 136 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in the Tigers’ 36-17 win over Florida in Columbia, Mo.
Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M — The sophomore quarterback from Kerrville (Tivy HS) connected on 23 of 38 pass attempts for 454 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He added 48 yards and a TD on 18 carries in the Aggies’ loss to Auburn.
Bryce Petty, Baylor — The junior quarterback from Midlothian (Midlothian HS) threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns as he connected on 23 of 31 passing attempts. He also rushed one time for a 6-yard TD in the Bears win over the Cyclones.
Tanner Price, Wake Forest — The senior quarterback from Austin (Westlake HS) had touchdowns rushing, receiving and passing in the Demon Deacons to a 34-10 upset of Maryland in Winston-Salem, N.C. He passed for 231 yards and a TD as he hit on 26 of 36 pass attempts. He also had nine carries for 47 yards and a TD, along with a reception for four yards and a touchdown.
Josh Stewart, Oklahoma State — The junior wide receiver from Denton (Guyer HS) had 10 catches for 141 yards and a punt return for 95 yards and a TD in the Cowboys’ 24-10 win over TCU in Stillwater, Okla.
Davis Webb, Texas Tech — The quarterback became the first Red Raider freshman to pass for more than 400 yards. The signal caller from Prosper (Prosper HS) threw for 462 yards and two touchdowns in Tech’s win over West Virginia.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year Division I Texas college.
The semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 18 with the final four unveiled Dec. 2.
The banquet and the announcement of the winner will be Jan. 10 in Tyler.
