KILLEEN, Texas (AP) — Thousands of mourners have gathered for the funeral of a Central Texas officer who was fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire at an apartment complex.
Robert Hornsby's flag-draped coffin rested at the front of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center on Thursday as his widow, Kimberly Hornsby, spoke of how his "love for people was unconditional and infectious."
Officers from across Texas — black bands across their badges — attended the service for the 32-year-old. Many in the standing-room-only crowd lined the walls of the hall.
Hornsby died early Sunday morning after his police tactical team responded to the complex on complaints of a man threatening people at a pool.
Hornsby, the father of a 4-year-old and 1-year-old, was killed along with the gunman, a 24-year-old Fort Hood soldier.
