Tyler Junior College director of bands Tom Mensch has been elected to membership in Phi Beta Mu, an international school bandmaster fraternity.

Phi Beta Mu is an honorary, nonpolitical, nonprofit fraternity, according to a TJC news release.

It includes 350 active members in Texas, with other chapters in most of the 50 states, plus Canada, Japan and Europe.

The fraternity inducted Mensch on Feb. 13 at the annual new members’ breakfast in San Antonio.

Whitehouse High School’s Denny Whitley sponsored him. Lindale ISD’s Steven Moore and Bene Davis and Jacksonville ISD’s Mike Bullock were co-sponsors.

A person must have at least 10 years of successful teaching experience and produced and maintained an outstanding and consistent public school band program to be considered for membership in Phi Beta Mu.

Before joining TJC, Mensch taught at Tyler’s Robert E. Lee High School from 1999 to 2003 and Houston’s Lamar High School from 1996 to 1999.
