The Farm-to-Market 849 bridge at Interstate 20 in Hideaway is closed until further notice after an oversize load carrying a tank vessel struck the westbound side.

Public Information Officer Kathi White with the Texas Department of Transportation said bridge experts from Austin came in Tuesday to evaluate and assist the Tyler district in assessing the damage and developing plans for its future repair or replacement.

“FM 849 will remain closed until the structural evaluation and any necessary repairs are complete to ensure the safety of the traveling public,” she said.

I-20 eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane for several hours after the incident because the tank vessel landed in the eastbound inside lane after being knocked off the truck.

The vessel damaged the concrete barrier dividing the eastbound and westbound lanes and some westbound pavement. Crews removed the vessel about 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the news release.

TxDOT already had finished construction plans to replace the bridge in anticipation of future funding opportunities.

These plans will greatly expedite the bridge’s repair or replacement as determined by the analysis, according to the news release.
