Texas State Highway 31 could become a four lane highway instead of two lanes from Tyler to Kilgore.

The Texas Department of Transportation will have staff and project consultants on hand Tuesday in Kilgore and Thursday in Tyler to tell the public about the proposed highway widening project.

Three alignment alternatives will be proposed for the widening of the highway from Loop 323 in Tyler east to Farm-to-Market 1639 in Kilgore.

Residents are encouraged to attend one of the come-and-go style meetings from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday in Kilgore or 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Tyler to review the presented alternatives, gather information and provide feedback.

The public meetings are identical but being held in two locations to accommodate the public.

There will not be a formal presentation.

Public input on the proposed improvements is crucial as project development progresses. The project will require new right-of-way from adjacent property owners.

Enhancements to the heavily traveled corridor include widening from a two-lane pavement structure to four lanes with a flush or depressed median, redesigning the roadway’s alignment to improve grades and curves to meet current design criteria and incorporating sidewalks and/or bicycle lanes where appropriate.

Texas Department of Transportation staff and project consultants will be available to answer individual questions.
