Whitehouse man arrested for murder after seeking medical attention at a local hospital for gunshot wound

A 21-year-old Whitehouse man who went to a local hospital Sunday for treatment of a gunshot wound later was arrested on suspicion of murder in the death of a 19-year-old Tyler man. 

Sheriff's deputies were called to a residence in the 8800 block of Deerwood Drive in Smith County shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday and found Andrew Carpenter, 19, inside the residence with a gunshot wound. Witnesses at the house were performing CPR on Carpenter, who was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's office. 

Deputies who secured the scene were able to locate several witnesses, and detectives and crime scene investigators responded to assist with the investigation.

Meanwhile, Martin Wesley Reynolds Jr., who sheriff's officials identified as the shooter, checked into a local hospital Sunday for treatment of a gunshot wound to his leg, according to the Smith County Sheriff's Office. 

Reynolds was arrested at the hospital and was booked into the Smith County Jail on a murder charge shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday, according to judicial records.

Reynolds is being held on a $750,000 bond, according to jail records.
