East Texans will honor military veterans through a variety of Veterans Day activities. This year's events will include:
East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society will have a Veterans Ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10 at 1601 Patterson Road, Athens.
The event will be held at Veterans Memorial with alternate rain plan under the pavilion. Speaker is State Rep. Lance Gooden. Other dignitaries will also be present.
Admission is free. Bring lawn chairs. All venues at the arboretum are handicapped accessible.
Tyler Archery Club is hosting a charity shoot for East Texas Veterans Alliance at 10 a.m. Saturday at 10197 Adam Henry Road, Tyler. The 3D Fundraiser Shoot will include 30 targets. Entry fee is $20, $15 for veterans. Class and door prizes. Lunch by Bass Catering. All proceeds will go to East Texas Veterans Alliance.
VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION
Fourth annual parade and cookout at 11 a.m. Saturday at Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home, 11466 Honor Lane, Tyler.
Parade at 11 a.m. immediately followed by a hamburger cookout hosted by Brookshire Grocery. There will be live music and East Texas SPCA will hold an adoption clinic.
Speaker is Congressman Louie Gohmert. It is open to the public and is free.
The Lindale Veterans Memorial Committee and American Legion, Jordan-Duncan, Post 15, Lindale, invite the community to join them at the Lindale Veterans Memorial at 1 p.m. Saturday for a ceremony to honor veterans and dedicate stones representing six of this nation’s wars. A reception will follow at Love & War in Texas courtesy of Tye Phelps. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Love & War restaurant.
The Chandler Historical Society will have its Souper Supper on Veterans Day on Saturday. Serving will begin at 5 p.m. at the Chandler Community Center. The event is the group’s largest fundraiser and kicks off the annual membership drive. There will also be a pie and cake silent auction along with a raffle of a copy of “Chandler, Its History and Its People.” All veterans will eat free and receive a gift from Chandler Ace Hardware. Dancers from 433 Dance Studio will present a patriotic-themed program at 7 p.m.
DANCE AND DINNER
The East Texas Veterans Alliance will have its Annual Veterans Day Dinner and Dance to honor our men and women in uniform -- retired, active, reserve – from 6-10 p.m. Saturday at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler. The dinner and dance is free for veterans and military personnel. Each person may invite a guest. Join the ETVA for a night of entertainment, camaraderie and great food. George Faber and Band will provide the entertainment. Seating is limited to 250. Register at eventbrite.com.
The East Texas Symphony Orchestra honors those who have served with a special Veterans Day Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday featuring John Philip Sousa’s “The Liberty Bell,” John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen” from “Saving Private Ryan,” and Tchaikovsky's “1812 Overture.” Also on the program is Elgar's Cello Concert featuring ETSO principal cellist Zachary Mansell. This celebratory and reflective evening is hosted by retired Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo, associate vice chancellor of the University of Texas System, and will feature the John Tyler High School Junior ROTC and the East Texas Youth Orchestra. Order tickets at etso.org.
