Benefit concert May 28 in Ben Wheeler to help tornado victims

A concert will take place May 28 at the Pickin’ Porch Park in Ben Wheeler to raise money for victims in Van Zandt County of the tornadoes that struck April 29.

The Van Zandt County Twister Relief Concert will begin at 12:30 p.m. According to the announcement, area musicians donating their talent for the cause include Jeff Allen, Wesley Pruitt Band, Will Burgin, Clay Thrash, Austin Layne, Heather Little, Meredith Crawford, Seek the Peace, Buddy and the Flashbacks, Diamondback TX, Chad Bennett, TuTu Jones and blacktopGYPSY.

Four people died, more than 50 were injured and hundreds were left homeless when several tornadoes struck Van Zandt, Henderson and Rains counties in one of the largest outbreaks of deadly storms in east Texas history.

Wesley Pruitt says the concert means a lot to him.

“Canton is my hometown,” Pruitt said in a news release. “Personally, this has been so heartbreaking and emotional. The whole town went dark that night. There was no light anywhere except for emergency responders. Wanting to help in the days to come I knew that musicians could be a much-needed light for so many.”

Besides music on two stages, the benefit concert will offer activities and entertainment for children, food trucks and a silent auction, the announcement said.

Moore’s Store and The Forge Bar & Grill are located nearby.

Organizers are hoping patrons will give at least $20. The money will be donated to the Van Zandt County Tornado Relief Fund at First State Bank of Ben Wheeler.

More information, including sponsorship opportunities and ways to help, are posted on the Van Zandt County Twister Relief Concert Facebook page.
