Jacksonville ISD held a Special Olympics Young Athletes event Friday at Howard Cook Field on the campus of Jacksonville High School.

The event paired children from the school district’s Preschool Programs for Children with Disabilities with typically developing children from Joe Wright Elementary, East Side Elementary and Fred Douglass Elementary schools to participate in the event, which acclimates students to the Special Olympics experience.

Special Olympics Young Athletes is a sport and play program for children with and without intellectual disabilities. Young Athletes introduces basic sports skills, like running, kicking and throwing. Young Athletes also offers families, teachers, caregivers and people from the community the chance to share the joy of sports with all children.
