Two men were shot and killed Sunday in the Athens area in what Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse called a robbery gone wrong.

Steven Kelley, 49, of Winona, and Cecil Spain, 31, of Grand Saline, were both killed Sunday after the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office said the men posed as customers looking to purchase a dog from a man and woman at their residence and tried to rob the couple.

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon on Hopson Drive in the Athens area. The sheriff’s office said the couple was physically restrained and suffered minor injuries during the home invasion. An unidentified resident shot the men. The office also said both deceased men were armed with handguns during the home invasion.

“It was a home invasion and attempted robbery that went very bad,” Hillhouse said in a news release.

Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Milton Adams conducted an inquest at the scene and ordered the deceased to be sent to American Forensics for an autopsy.
