Law enforcement officials confirmed during a press conference Sunday afternoon the remains found Saturday evening are 10-year-old Kayla Gomez-Orozco, who was missing since Tuesday.

Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said Kayla's body was found in a well on a property a few miles north of Bullard in the 2200 block of Farm-to-Market Road 2493, also known as Old Jacksonville Highway, where a relative resides. Smith said Kayla's body was recovered after midnight Sunday.

Smith said they received an investigative lead, which prompted the search of the property, and it was not a result of the volunteer search that occurred earlier Saturday.

Smith said an autopsy has been ordered. He added there is no information yet concerning a possible motive, and investigators are "going to let the autopsy speak for itself at this time."

Smith also indicated the investigation is ongoing at the crime scene, and there are several vehicles left to be searched.

Separate from the press conference, the Tyler Morning Telegraph confirmed that Kayla's relative Gustavo Zavala-Garcia was booked into the Smith County Jail on an immigration hold on Nov. 6.

Zavala-Garcia, 24, is married to a cousin of Kayla. He is said to have been the last person to see Kayla.

Court records show he has been previously charged with assault family violence. It is unknown whether additional charges will be filed.
