The city of Troup has just received its official letter from the Texas Department of Insurance State Fire Marshal’s Office lowering its Public Protection Classification score from a four to a three, according to a news release.

A lower score may result in reduced property insurance rates, according to a news release.

The scores were reduced for several years because of the construction of a new water tower, which improved the scores given to the water distribution system, as well as from Smith County ESD No. 2 providing funds for fire apparatus upgrades and firefighter training.

Troup received 72.14 points out of a possible 106.50.

The improved score will be effective on Oct. 1, according to the city.
