Mental Health Month awareness events

 

May is Mental Health Month and several opportunities are available for the community to learn about the disease and find resources.

RE-fresh! Depression self care management class is 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays during May at Center for Healthy Living.

Rebroadcast of Mental Health and the Church, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays during May at UT Health Northeast.

Suicide Lecture, Fridays during May at Andrews Center.

Nutrition and your mood, 2 to 3 p.m. May 15, UT Health Northeast.

Exercise and your mood, 2 to 3 p.m. May 22, UT Health Northeast.

Latest trends in psychiatric drugs, 2 to 3 p.m. May 29, UT Health Northeast.

 

ETMC offering free stroke seminar

 

ETMC will offer a free KnowledgeFirst Forum on the warning signs of stroke with Dr. Allison Hennigan of the ETMC Neurological Institute on Tuesday, May 13, at noon in the ETMC Pavilion in Tyler.

“Stroke is ranked as the fourth-leading cause of death and leading cause of adult disability in the United States,” Dr. Hennigan said. “We will discuss the signs to look for, current treatment options and how you can reduce your risks of having a stroke.”

Lunch will be served. Free parking is available next to the ETMC Pavilion, 801 Clinic Drive in Tyler. The gate and building will open at 11:15 a.m. and the presentation will begin at noon. Please pre-register by calling 866-333-ETMC and press 6.

 

Save the Date: LUET weigh-outs set for May 31 at mall

Mark your calendars for May 31, as the Broadway Square Mall in Tyler will hold the last possible chance for anyone to weigh-out, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Any person who may be unable to weigh-out at this Last Chance Weigh-Out should make plans to return to the location where they originally entered, sometime between May 19 and May 30.

Remember that every registered team across East Texas is competing against each other. The winning teams will be selected based on the highest combined average percentage of weight loss by all of the members who return to have a final weight listed on their account.

Each individual person is also eligible to become entered into the grand prize drawings for the $1,000 Brookshire gift cards and for the 2014 Dodge Dart from Allen Samuels Tyler, provided participants have successfully lost at least 5 percent of their starting weights when they return for the weigh-out.

 

Free healthy living workshops held Thursday

 

Learn how to feel better and enjoy life more, even with a chronic disease like diabetes, at “Healthy Living Workshops,” a series of seven free seminars hosted by UT Health Northeast and Texas Health Resources.

The first seminar will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at the East Texas Cornerstone Assistance Network, 200 N. Beckham Ave. in Tyler.

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program teaches practical skills that enable people to live a healthy life.

If someone who has a chronic condition, such as diabetes, arthritis or high blood pressure, this workshop can help one feel better, be in control and do the things one wants to do.

Topics covered in the seminars are:

Practical ways to deal with disease symptoms, pain and fatigue

Healthy eating and exercise choices

Relaxation techniques and how to handle difficult emotions

Evaluating new treatment choices

Appropriate use of medications

Effective ways to talk with doctors and family members about health

The remaining six seminars will take place on consecutive Wednesdays: May 15, May 22, May 29, June 5, June 12 and June 19.

The seminars are free, but registration is recommended.
