The city of Tyler Parks and Recreation Department and the Whitehouse/Tyler Metro Track Club will hold the 15th Annual Hershey’s Track and Field Meet.

The meet is scheduled for May 17 at the Robert E. Lee High School track complex. The event is free and open to the public.

“The reason it’s so important is in the sport of track and field … the early starts advance farther and faster because youth athletes, they don’t get to compete in events until they’re in the seventh grade. But take a kid who started running at age 8. When they get to the seventh grade, you can see a difference in the agility of the child,” said Tutu Brown, founder and president of the Whitehouse/Tyler Metro Track Club.

During next month’s meet, participants will compete in basic track and field events, such as running, jumping and throwing, he said. There will be individual events as well as relay events.

First-, second- and third-place winners for ages 9 to 14 will move on to the state competition, which is scheduled for June in Round Rock.

Although only ages 9 to 14 can advance to the state competition, children ages 5 to 8 also may participate in the Hershey’s Track and Field Meet, Brown said.

Brown said participants also are not allowed to wear shoes with track spikes or shoes that were meant to have track spikes.
