(MCT) -- Kilgore ISD is implementing a new process to check students' residency status in the district.

Students can submit a notarized statement that they live with someone -- not a parent -- in the district, Kilgore ISD Superintendent Cara Cooke.

Now additional steps will be required and students will have to prove residency.

Parents or legal guardians of students will have to bring a proof of residency when the student is enrolled. Students living with a friend or relative in the district will have to bring that adult and a parent with them to fill out a residency statement.

Students who no longer live in the district will have to fill out a transfer form at no cost in order to still register and attend KISD.

"It's not like we're going to be turning everyone away, but there [are] certain avenues that they need to go through to do it correctly," Cooke said.
