TJC: Board to look into fee increase for some programs, tests today

Fee increases for certain Tyler Junior College programs and tests are under consideration.

The board is scheduled to vote on the proposed changes during an 11 a.m. meeting today in the White Administrative Services Center Board Room on the college’s main campus, 1400 E. Fifth St.

A 10 a.m. board workshop in the White Administrative Services Center Board Conference Room also is scheduled.

The college is proposing to raise the fee for its Health Education System Inc. GAP test to $75, a $25 increase over the current price. The new price would be effective June 1, according to provided information.

The test is used as an entrance exam for students who want to transition from the Licensed Vocational Nurse program or paramedic program to the Associate Degree Nursing program.

The college also is proposing an increase to its distance education fee. The current fee is $15 per course and the proposed change is $8 per semester credit hour, which would amount to $24 for a three-hour course.

Even with the fee increase, the college would remain one of the least expensive for distance education, according to TJC information.

College spokesman Fred Peters said the college also is considering some price changes for certain programs that cost more to offer, such as those in the allied health fields.

The board also is scheduled to vote on the approval of the physical therapy assistant program, one of the new programs to be offered at the school.
