A Palestine woman was struck and killed by an SUV on Monday after attempting to help a dog that was dead in the road.

Trooper Jean Dark, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the incident happened at 12:37 p.m. on U.S. Highway 287, south of Palestine.

She said Sherri Hope, 46, was crouched down near the center stripe of the highway attempting to help the dog when an oncoming 2001 Ford Explorer, heading south, struck her.

Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace James Westley pronounced Ms. Hope dead at the scene, Trooper Dark said.
