The FRESH 15 road race is offering an $11,000 prize purse and will present a post-race hour-long concert by Curtis Grimes, a Gilmer singer/songwriter and recent contestant on the NBC TV show “The Voice.”
Trent Brookshire, senior vice president and division manager, made the announcements during a news conference Tuesday at FRESH by Brookshire.
“We anticipate 2,000 runners,” Brookshire said.
The race will start and finish on March 1 at the FRESH grocery store on Old Jacksonville Highway and will run through parts of south Tyler, along Grande Boulevard into Hollytree and surrounding neighborhoods.
“This race is going to be something special,” Brookshire said, citing three goals.
The first goal is to put on a world-class event in Tyler, the second goal is to encourage health, wellness and healthy living and the last thing is to donate all proceeds from the race to two charities, Brookshire said.
Charities chosen to benefit from the race are the American Heart Association and the Bethesda Health Clinic.
The FRESH 15 is a 15k, 5k and one-mile kids’ race.
The race will be managed by Bill Burke, owner of Premier Event Management, who has more than 20 years experience organizing races and manages some major road races and triathlons across the country.
“We are very excited to bring a premier running event to Tyler that will both encourage health and give back to the community,” Rick Rayford, president and CEO for Brooshire Grocery Co., said.
“We believe that the values of Brookshire Grocery Co. as a whole resonate very well with the objectives of the FRESH 15, and we look forward to providing Tyler and surrounding areas an unforgettable event.”
The purse prize of $10,000 cash and $1,000 made up of Brookshire Grocery Co. gift cards will be awarded in various categories.
A total of $4,500 will be awarded the top male/female 15k winners: first place, $1,500; second place, $1,250; third place, $1,000; fourth place, $500 and fifth place, $250.
Brookshire Grocery Co. gift cards will be awarded to males/females in sixth place, $150; seventh place, $125; eighth place, $100; ninth place, $75; and 10th place, $50.
In the Master’s Division for male/female runners over age 40, first prize will be $200; second place, $150; third place, $100 and fourth place, $50.
The top three finishers in each age division will receive a high-quality medal in addition the 15k finisher medal, stated a news release from Brookshire Grocery Company.
Race participants, family members and friends may attend a concert after the race by Grimes, who will run in the 5K race.
Grimes, 27, sings Texas country music and has performed in front of millions of people all over the U.S., Brookshire said. Grimes has shared the stage with acts such as Eli Young Band, Justin Moore, Easton Corbin, Jamey Johnson, Dough Stone and others.
Registration for the 15K race at 8 a.m. will be $40 through Jan. 31, $50 from Feb. 1-27 and $60 on race day.
Registration for the 5K race at 8:15 a.m. will be $25 through Jan. 31, $30 from Feb. 1-27 and $40 race day.
Registration for the kids’ race at 9:30 a.m. will be $15 for ages 7 and under and $15 for children ages 8-12.
“If you haven’t signed up for the race, you need to get in a hurry and sign up,” Rayford said.
