ELKHART — A man here is accused of fatally shooting his 43-year-old ex-wife and mother of several teenage children before attempting suicide Wednesday.
Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said a 911 call was placed to his office about 9 a.m. reporting a murder-suicide at 410 Parker Street in Elkhart.
“We immediately had the elementary and intermediate schools put on lock down because they were nearby and we had a reported homicide and didn’t know exactly what was going on,” he said.
When deputies arrived, they forced their way into the wood frame home at the corner of Parker Street and U.S. Highway 287 south, Taylor said.
“They found the female deceased of gunshot wounds and the man lying face down, but still breathing,” he said.
Taylor said the town’s first homicide in two years left the couple’s children without a mother and their father in critical condition in the ICU of a Tyler hospital.
Taylor did not know if the man’s injuries were the result of a gunshot or some other weapon.
At the scene, family members and friends gathered as detectives gathered evidence from inside the home.
“Last year we didn’t have any homicides, and we typically average about four, so we had an anomaly last year,” Taylor said. “Just this morning one of my people went down the hall saying we haven’t had a homicide in awhile, but at that same time our dispatchers were just getting the call from Elkhart.”
Taylor did not release the names of the victim or ex-husband due to pending notification of some family members. He did say the children were with family and had been seen by school counselors.
