An East Texan was named The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week on Monday.
Mabank’s Kolton Browning, the University of Louisiana at Monroe star quarterback, earned the weekly honor, Cindy Smoak, vice president of SPORTyler, announced.
The Sun Belt Conference signal caller tied his career high for both passing touchdowns and total touchdowns, garnering five through the air and another on the ground in the Warhawks’ 49-37 win over Troy on Saturday in Troy, Ala.
The senior completed 21 of 31 pass attempts for 354 yards. Browning has now thrown nine touchdowns with no interceptions in his two games since returning from injury.
Week 10 Honorable Mentions:
Malcolm Brown, Texas: The junior running back from Cibolo (Steele High School) rushed for 119 yards and scored four touchdowns on 20 carries in the Longhorns’ 35-13 win over Kansas on Saturday in Austin.
David Cobb, Minnesota: The junior running back Killeen (Ellison HS) rushed for 188 yards and a touchdown on 29 attempts. He also had two catches for 48 yards in the Gophers’ 42-39 win over Indiana on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
Treyvon Green, Northwestern: The junior running back from Mesquite (Rowlett HS) gained 149 yards and scored three TDs in the Wildcats’ near upset of Nebraska. Northwestern lost 27-24 on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M: The sophomore quarterback from Kerrville (Tivy HS) hit on 16 of 24 pass attempts for 273 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 67 yards and two TDs on seven carries in the Aggies’ 57-7 win over UTEP on Saturday in College Station.
Desmond Roland, Oklahoma State: The junior running back from Dallas (Richardson Lake Highlands HS) rushed for 96 yards and added three TDs on 31 carries in the Cowboys’ 52-34 win over Texas Tech in Lubbock.
Charles Sims, West Virginia: The senior running back from Houston (Westbury HS) had 154 yards and a TD in 24 carries. He added three receptions for 35 yards and a TD in the Mountaineers’ 30-27 overtime win over TCU in Fort Worth.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year Division I Texas college.
The semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 18 with the final four unveiled Dec. 2.
The banquet and the announcement of the winner will be Jan. 10 in Tyler.
