Nikki Evans, a senior at The Brook Hill School, is among the East Texas students recognized by the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Miss Evans was named a Commended Scholar, according to the school’s blog.
To receive this recognition, a student is among two-thirds of the 50,000 high scorers on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Students are recognized in this category based on a nationally applied selection index score that can vary annually.
Commended Scholars typically are within the 96th percentile of college-bound students who took the test their junior year, according to the National Merit website.
The students receive letters of commendation to recognize “their outstanding ability and potential for academic success in college,” according to the website.
Although they do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of them may be candidates for other corporately sponsored scholarships.
