Van Zandt County’s only hospital closed unexpectedly Thursday afternoon.
Cozby-Germany Hospital in Grand Saline shut its doors 10 minutes after board members were notified of the closure by managing doctors, board member Tom Elliot said.
The small hospital had a licensed capacity of 52 beds with a staff of about 80, Elliot said. He said the two physicians assured him they would pay employees for work rendered.
Elliot said there have been false reports about whether the hospital is eligible to reopen. He said the hospital is in compliance with Medicare requirements and board members are in contact with state agencies to maintain the hospitals accreditation.
He said the board has hired management consultants specializing in small hospitals to determine its financial sustainability.
“One of the fears is that the hospital can’t be reopened but that’s not true,” Elliot said. “It’s not shut for good unless we come to the conclusion that it can’t be run on budget.”
