A deputy who was injured during the 2005 Smith County Courthouse shooting arrested a 26-year-old man on Monday after an altercation and vehicle pursuit.

Deputy Sherman Dollison pulled over a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Cody Delaney on a routine traffic stop Monday afternoon on Texas Highway 31 West, according to John Moore, public information officer for the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

Moore said details of the incident were limited Monday evening, but the deputy and driver were involved in some sort of an altercation, which ended with Delaney taking off in his vehicle.

Delaney had multiple warrants for his arrest for traffic-related tickets, Moore said.

After a vehicle pursuit, Delaney was apprehended.

He was in the Smith County jail charged with taking a weapon from an officer, evading arrest with a vehicle and resisting arrest. A bond has not been set as of press time.

Dollison was the first deputy who confronted gunman David Arroyo during the Smith County Courthouse shooting in 2005. He was shot four times, and has received several awards and honors for bravery.
