The Tyler Public Library’s Summer Reading Club is in session for two more weeks, according to a press release from the city.
“We have had a great turn out with more than 700 people signed up; almost 600 of those are children,” Youth Services Librarian Linda Gray said in the release. “However, we have half as many reading logs returned, and we’d love to see more,” she said.
The last day to turn in reading logs is July 24. It only takes 12 hours of reading to complete a reading log, which can be independent reading or listening to someone read aloud.
When children 17 years or younger bring a completed log to the library, they can earn a free book and food coupons from their choice of the following: Andy’s Frozen Custard, Dairy Queen, Great American Cookies or Whataburger, according to the release.
Readers also are entered into a raffle drawing for each completed reading log. Prizes in the raffle include coupons from Tiger Creek Refuge, the Texas State Railroad, Andy’s Frozen Custard, Panera Bread, Target, Times Square Cinema and books autographed by the author, according to the release.
“Local area businesses have been very generous in their support of summer reading, and we are excited to offer these prizes to our young readers,” Ms. Gray said.
Other companies that have supported programs at the library are The Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Brookshire’s, Great American Cookies, Big Lots and Wal-Mart.
The raffle prize winners will be announced at the closing party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 26 in the library’s auditorium, according to the release. Anyone wishing to participate can download a reading log from the library’s website, www.TylerLibrary.com , or stop by the library and pick one up. Winners do not need to be at the closing party to win. The library will contact the winners and hold prizes until Aug. 12.
