Canton teen charged in fake kidnapping

CANTON, TX- On 7/11/2013, the Canton Police Department obtained 3 arrest warrants for Seniya Jones in connection with the false report of a kidnapping made by Jones on 7/9/2013. Arrest warrants were obtained for Jones for the following charges: Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Texas Penal Code Section 31.07 (State Jail Felony); False Alarm or Report, Texas Penal Code Section 42.06 (Class A Misdemeanor); and False Report to a Peace Officer, Texas Penal Code Section 37.08 (Class B Misdemeanor).On 7/12/2013 at approximately 9:00 A.M, Seniya Jones turned herself in at Canton Police Department. Jones was booked in and then arraigned by Judge Lilia Durham of the Canton Municipal Court. Bail was set at $2,000 for the charge of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, $1,000 for the charge of False Alarm or Report, and $1,000 for the charge of False Report to a Peace Officer. Seniya Jones was then transferred to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office.The Canton Police Department has been in contact with the Van Zandt County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, and will be seeking restitution for the expenses of the manhunt caused by Jones’ false report. These expenses included calling in off duty Police Officers to assist in the search of the reported kidnapper, as well as expenses incurred by the Texas Department of Public Safety for the use of their helicopter in an aerial search.This case will be referred to the Van Zandt County Criminal District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
