VIDEO: Edward Snowden nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO, Norway — Two lawmakers in Norway Wednesday said they have nominated U.S. whistleblower EdwardSnowden for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The intelligence contractor who leaked documents that revealed the extent of the government surveillance of telephone and Internet records has temporary asylum in Russia.

"The public debate and changes in policy that have followed in the wake of Snowden's whistleblowing has contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order," Bard Vegar Solhjell and Snorre Valen of the opposition Socialist Left Party said.

Parliamentarians, academics, former peace laureates, as well as current and former members of the Nobel Committee are among those who have the right to make nominations by the Feb. 1 deadline.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which is overseeing the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons arsenal, won the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.
