VIDEO: Texas teachers fill classrooms with 'crowdfunding'

HOUSTON (AP) — With the first day of classes arriving, Texas schoolteachers in need of books, calculators and Kleenex are turning to the Internet to pay for them.

The Houston Chronicle ( ) reports that a number of teachers have posted requests for donations on sites such as or One teacher at the KIPP Houston high school is asking for $800 to pay for first aid items, gloves and soap for science labs.

Another teacher in southwest Houston posted on asking for money to buy books. She's collected more than $500 so far.

In some cases, administrators encourage their teachers to seek "crowdfunding" for projects or supplies not covered by district budgets.
