HEARNE, Texas (AP) — More than 100 mourners have turned out to celebrate the life of a 93-year-old Central Texas woman who was fatally shot during an armed confrontation with a police officer.
A funeral was held Saturday afternoon in Hearne for Pearlie Golden.
Golden was killed May 6 at her home by a Hearne police officer responding to a report of a woman brandishing a gun. The Hearne City Council later voted to fire Officer Stephen Stem.
The Eagle newspaper reports neighbor Margie Caballero described Golden as "the sweetest woman that could be." Cedric Chappel, who grew up next door to Golden, told KBTX-TV that she was "a very very positive person" in the community.
Texas Rangers are helping investigate. The case is expected to go to a grand jury.
