A knife-wielding man suspected of robbing a convenience store was apprehended when he was spotted on a Tyler street just hours after the store was robbed.

Tyler police said they caught Jose Alberto Aguilar on Walton Road near Pearl Street about 11 p.m. Monday night and took him into custody on an aggravated robbery warrant.

Smith County Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Krista Caulkins said Aguilar, 30, of Tyler, was wanted in connection with the robbery of a convenience store in the 1200 block of East Northeast Loop 323 about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Ms. Caulkins said a man robbed the clerk, threatening the employee with a knife before leaving the store in a gold Toyota passenger car.

As sheriff’s deputies rushed to investigate the crime, they got word the vehicle was in the 3000 block of Frankston Highway, so they watched the home until someone came out.

Ms. Caulkins said that person was arrested on charges unrelated to the robbery, but during the investigation they were able to identify Aguilar as the robbery suspect.

She said deputies were able to obtain a warrant for Aguilar’s arrest with a $250.000 pre set bond by District Judge Christi Kennedy.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Aguilar was behind bars in the Smith County Jail.
