Locals launch new chapter of American Council of the Blind

East Texas residents have launched a local chapter of the American Council of the Blind.

The chapter is open to all residents who are blind or visually impaired, according to a news release.

As an advocacy organization, the American Council of the Blind works to increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity and quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired, according to its website.

The local affiliate has 18 members, most of whom live in Tyler.

Meetings will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. the first Monday of every month in the Blind Client Service’s Community Room at The Lighthouse, 411 W. Front St., in Tyler.

East Texas Area Council of the Blind Officers are: Michelle Boyd, president; Jarrett Gist, first vice president; Seth Wilson, second vice president; Charles Coleman III, treasurer; and Dana Morrison, secretary. Board Members are Wendell Jeffery, Jack Malone and Don Shaw.
