The public is invited to a grand opening event today for the Fair Plaza parking garage downtown.
The event is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. near the pedestrian entrance at the corner of West Elm Street and Broadway Avenue. The vehicle entrance is off of South College Avenue, and those who want to attend today’s program may park inside the garage, city of Tyler Senior Public Relations Specialist Serena Butcher said.
During the grand opening event, she said the clock at the garage will chime, and information will be given on the parking garage and the clock, which features clock faces from the 1909 Smith County Courthouse.
She said a ribbon cutting also will take place, and a sculpture of R.W. Fair, whose family donated the land for the parking garage, will be unveiled.
The garage has four levels, including the ground level, as well as more than 380 parking spaces.
“People are really excited about it,” Ms. Butcher said, adding that she posted a picture of the clock Tuesday on social media, and one person said they drove downtown just to see the clock, which was installed earlier this month.
“It’s kind of exciting for downtown.”
