KILGORE (KYTX) – Two children are dead, and one adult is hospitalized in critical condition following a two-vehicle accident near Kilgore early Thursday morning.

Texas DPS reports 5-year-old Ryera Patel, and 12-year-old Trish Patel, both of Caldwell, Texas, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Both children were riding in a van driven by their father, 42-year-old Ketanbahai Patel. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The child’s mother, Heenda Patel, also a passenger in the van, is listed in critical condition at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview.

The driver of the second vehicle, 22-year-old Shelby Taylor of Henderson, was traveling south in the northbound lane of Highway 259 when the two vehicles struck in the center of the road. She has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter. Taylor and her passenger, 21-year-old Sara Furlong of Austin were treated and released.

The investigation led DPS Troopers to secure a DWI search warrant for Taylor.

Troopers say the children were not wearing seat belts. The fatal wreck occurred at 1:30 a.m. Thursday on Highway 259 near Dudley in Rusk County.
