A man who is accused of committing a drive-by shooting after a fight is in the Cherokee County Jail.

Officers were called to the 700 block of Davis Avenue on Saturday about a shooting, according to the Jacksonville Police Department.

The female caller told officers before the shooting that Ben Monroe, of Jacksonville, was involved in a fight near the Lincoln Park basketball court area.

She said Monroe told her to “not sleep lightly” after the fight.

Later that night, she saw Monroe in a white Oldsmobile driving in the neighborhood, before he pulled out a long-barrel shotgun and shot one round in the air and a second at her home, according the release.

Several people were standing in the street when the shots were fired, police said.

An officer went to Monroe’s residence and found the car in the driveway and Monroe sitting on his front porch.

He gave the officer consent to search the area, and the officer found the shotgun taken down into three pieces hidden in a doghouse in his backyard.

Monroe was arrested and charged with deadly conduct, a third-degree felony.
