The Tyler ISD board of trustees welcomed two new trustees and one returning one to the board today.

The Rev. Orenthia Mason, District 2; Dr. Patricia Nation, District 4; and Barbara Ann Smith, District 5, recited the oath of office during a special called board meeting.

The Rev. Mason is returning for what she has said will be her fourth and final term. Dr. Nation is replacing Shirley Jordan, who did not seek re-election.

Ms. Smith was elected to complete an unexpired term, which will end in May 2015.

The board canvassed the votes from the May 10 election. They also voted to keep the same officers, which means the Rev. Mason will remain board president and Andy Bergfeld, District 7 trustee, will remain vice president.

After the open session, the board met in executive session where they discussed the status of the application process for a district superintendent.

Current Superintendent Gary Mooring announced his resignation in April citing ongoing health issues. His last day is set for June 30.

The school board is conducting a search for the next superintendent and is accepting letters of interest and resumes sent to TISD attorney John Hardy through May 30.

The Rev. Mason said 13 applications have been received and once the application deadline passes, the board will set a date to review the applications.
