Tyler ISD announces valedictorians, salutatorians

Tyler ISD this morning announced the valedictorians and salutatorians for the 2014 graduating class: Dhruv Narayanan, Valedictorian, Robert E. Lee High School; Char De Young, Valedictorian, John Tyler High School; Robert Tyler Jones, Salutatorian, Robert E. Lee High School; and Cristal Galindez, Salutatorian, John Tyler High School.

Narayanan, son of Nary Subramanian and Lalitha Krishnan, will attend The University of Texas at Dallas in the fall as a McDermott Scholar and plans to study Mechanical Engineering. While at Lee, Dhruv served as treasurer and webmaster of the Chamber Orchestra, founder and president of Red Raider Robotics, president of Mu-Alpha-Theta, president of the National Honor Society, REL HOSA member, webmaster team captain of the UIL Math/Science team, vice president of the UIL Literary Criticism team and HOBY ambassador. Dhruv is also a NASA INSPIRE online community member and NASA High School Aerospace Scholar, as well as a Tiger Rock Martial Arts black belt and certified instructor.

De Young, daughter of Matrise Johnson and Phythias Young, has earned a Faulkner Scholarship and will attend the Texas Christian University in the fall to major in Pre-Med and become a pediatrician. Char De also hopes to establish her own foundation to help others achieve their life goals. During her years at John Tyler, Char De was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Lady Lions basketball team and served as vice president of Senior Leadership. She received the United States Achievement Academy Award, All East Texas Academic Team honor and Student of the Month.

Jones, son of Dr. Rob and Stephanie Jones, will attend Southern Methodist University in the fall to study Mechanical Engineering, Business and Mathematics. Robert has served as student body president, class president, president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is a four-year letterman on the varsity baseball team, where he was awarded 2013 First Team All-District Catcher and 2013 All East Texas Honorable Mention Catcher, is a member of the Dallas Patriots Baseball Club and Young Life. He has organized food drives for the East Texas Food Bank, blood drives for Carter Blood Care and also volunteers as a Salvation Army Bell Ringer.

Galindez, daughter of Leonardo and Araceli Galindez, is a Dell Scholar and will attend The University of Texas at Tyler with plans to become a dentist. Cristal is a member of the John Tyler Drill Team, National Honor Society, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Texas Bank and Trust Student Board of Directors, student council, Amigos Club, and French Club. She also received an Outstanding Senior Award sponsored by the Rotary Club and an AVID Star Award. Cristal plays an active role in the community by volunteering with the Salvation Army, East Texas Food Bank, Carter Blood Care, and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
