GILMER (AP) — A judge in East Texas has refused to allow more than 70 allegedly neglected animals to be returned to a Gladewater home where they were seized this month.
The Longview News-Journal (http://bit.ly/S41gCs ) reports the owners were ordered Friday to pay about $20,000 in fines, mainly for care costs for the animals.
The 64 dogs, six cats and a horse were removed May 8 by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and continue to be observed in Dallas.
No charges have been filed amid the investigation.
The newspaper reports Carol Pinckert rented the property. Linda Luker resided in a warehouse and cared for the animals. Pinckert said it had been some time since she had checked on the condition of the animals. Both women are fighting eviction proceedings.
