The annual Smith County peace officer memorial is set for noon today at the T.B. Butler Fountain Plaza downtown.
All peace officers and the public are welcomed to attend this service to pay tribute to fellow Texas peace officers who made the supreme sacrifice while performing their duties.
In the United States this past year, there were 42 on-duty deaths for peace officers.
In Texas, there were 16 peace officer deaths, with one in Harrison County when a sheriff’s deputy died in a vehicle pursuit.
There have been no law enforcement deaths in Smith County since 2006 when Constable Dale Geddie Jr. was shot and killed as he responded to a domestic violence call off of U.S. Highway 271 just outside Tyler. The shooter was shot and killed by police as he fired on other officers.
The Tyler Police Honor Guard, Department of Public Safety Honor Guard, Smith County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard and Lindale Police Department Honor Guard will conduct the service.
