Broadcaster and author Tavis Smiley is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at Wiley College’s 125th Baccalaureate and Commencement Convocation today.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. today in the college’s Alumni Gymnasium in Marshall.

Smiley is the host of “Tavis Smiley,” the late-night television show on PBS, “The Tavis Smiley Show” from Public Radio International and “Tavis Talks,” the daily online radio program on the Tavis Smiley Network on BlogTalk Radio, according to a Wiley College news release.

In his latest New York Times best seller, “The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto,” Smiley and co-author Dr. Cornel West challenge Americans to re-examine their assumptions about poverty in this country.

His next work to be published in September is “Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Year.”

Wiley College is a four-year, private, historically black, liberal arts college that was founded in 1873 by the Methodist Episcopal Church’s Bishop Isaac Wiley.
