(MCT) --- Palestine YMCA, 5500 N. Loop 256, will offer a free self-defense class for women 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 17.

Donald Hammock, executive director of the Crisis Center of Anderson and Cherokee Counties, will teach the The RAD (Rape, Aggression, Defense) System. Hammock is a reserve peace officer and a certified RAD instructor.

Hammock said the certification to teach this program is stringent.

“In order to teach this program, one has to be a certified peace officer," Hammock said. "This means that the students are being instructed by someone who has dealt with violent perpetrators in real life.”

Women can register by calling 903-723-5858 in Palestine or 903-586-9118 if in Jacksonville.
