A track and field event designed for special needs students will be held May 16 in Henderson.
The Sarah Murphy Field Day includes traditional track and field events that are modified so that even the most severe students can be successful and feel like a champion, according to a news release from Henderson ISD.
It will be held at Lion Stadium, 200 N. High St., and include students from nine East Texas school districts, including Henderson, Tatum, Laneville, Overton, Carlisle, West Rusk, Whitehouse, Troup and Arp ISDs.
The day starts at 9 a.m. with a parade of athletes and opening ceremonies followed by the start of the games.
Each athlete, volunteer and coach will be provided a T-shirt with the event logo on it and a sack lunch, according to the release. Each athlete will receive a medal for every track event they participate in, a ribbon for every field event and various prizes at the nine different activity stations throughout the event.
At the end of the day each athlete will receive a trophy awarding them for their participation and sportsmanship.
Last year’s event brought 250 athletes and approximately 500 volunteers.
