(MCT) -- Palestine Police Department has received multiple complaints of telephone solicitors claiming to represent electric companies and demanding immediate payment from the call recipient to avoid having his or her electricity cut off.

According to a news release, the solicitor attempts to have the call recipient purchase a loadable debit cards and provide debit card information.

Other phone scams include callers stating that the call recipient has won a sweepstakes, but needs to send money to collect the prize.

The department reminds citizens to not give out checking account and routing numbers and credit card or debit card information and to be skeptical of things that sound "to good to be true."

If a call is questionable, the department advises that residents disconnect and call their service provider.
